Camera or Mic Not Working? Quick Video Chat Fixes

By randomstrangers.chat team5 min read

You press start, and instead of your face you see a black box, or the other person can't hear you. It's frustrating, but a video chat camera not working is almost always caused by a handful of fixable things. Work through the steps below in order and you'll usually be back in a chat within a few minutes.

New to random chat? Our random video chat beginner guide explains how calls connect.

Quick checklist first

Before diving into settings, try these 30-second fixes:

  1. Reload the page. It sounds too simple, but it often works.
  2. Check the physical stuff. Is there a privacy cover or sticker over the lens? Is an external webcam or headset plugged in properly?
  3. Check the mute and camera buttons in the chat itself. You may have muted your mic or turned your camera off.
  4. Restart your browser, then your device if needed.

Check browser permissions

The single most common reason for a video chat camera not working is a blocked permission.

Browsers block websites from using your camera and mic until you say yes. If you clicked Block, or dismissed the prompt, the site can't see your devices.

How to tell

  • Look for a camera icon with a cross or a small warning in the address bar.
  • If you see a "camera access denied" style message, permissions are the problem.

How to fix it

Click the icon to the left of the web address (often a padlock, sliders or a camera symbol), find Camera and Microphone, and set both to Allow. Then reload the page. The browser-specific steps below go into more detail.

Check your device's system settings too

Even if the browser allows it, your operating system can block the camera:

  • Windows: Settings > Privacy & security > Camera (and Microphone). Make sure camera access is on and that desktop apps, including your browser, are allowed.
  • macOS: System Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera (and Microphone). Make sure your browser is switched on.
  • iPhone/iPad: Settings > [your browser] or Settings > Safari, and allow Camera and Microphone.
  • Android: Settings > Apps > [your browser] > Permissions, and allow Camera and Microphone.

Menu names vary by version, but they're usually close to these.

Close apps using the camera

On many devices only one app can use the camera at a time. If another program has it, your browser gets a black screen or an error.

Common culprits:

  • Video calling and meeting apps running in the background.
  • Camera or photo apps.
  • Screen recording or streaming software.
  • Another browser tab with a video call open.

Close them fully (not just minimise), then reload the chat page. On a computer, restarting is the quickest way to make sure nothing is holding the camera.

Choose the right device

If you have more than one camera or mic, for example a laptop webcam plus an external one, or a headset plus built-in mic, the browser may be using the wrong one. In the site-settings panel or browser settings, pick the device you actually want.

Fixes for Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Edge

Exact steps change between versions, but these usually work.

Chrome (desktop and Android)

  1. Click the icon left of the address bar and open Site settings.
  2. Set Camera and Microphone to Allow.
  3. If you have several devices, check Chrome's Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Camera (and Microphone) and choose the right default.
  4. Reload the page.

If your microphone is not working in Chrome, also check that the correct mic is chosen and that your system input volume isn't at zero.

Safari (Mac, iPhone and iPad)

  1. On Mac: Safari > Settings > Websites > Camera (and Microphone), and set the site to Allow.
  2. On iPhone/iPad: tap the page settings icon in the address bar, choose Website Settings, and set Camera and Microphone to Allow.
  3. Reload the page.

Firefox

  1. Click the camera or permissions icon in the address bar.
  2. Remove any "Blocked" permission for camera or microphone.
  3. Reload and choose Allow when asked.
  4. You can review saved permissions under Settings > Privacy & Security > Permissions.

Edge

  1. Click the icon left of the address bar and choose Permissions for this site.
  2. Set Camera and Microphone to Allow.
  3. Check Settings > Cookies and site permissions > Camera for the default device.
  4. Reload the page.

Keep your browser updated

Video chat relies on modern browser features. If you're on an old version, update it. It fixes many odd problems on its own.

Audio problems

Sometimes the camera's fine but sound isn't.

  • They can't hear you: check the in-chat mute button, your system mic settings and that the right mic is selected.
  • You can't hear them: check your device volume, your output device (speakers vs headphones) and that the tab isn't muted.
  • Echo or feedback: use headphones. Echo usually happens when speakers play the other person's voice back into your mic.

Connection problems and how to test

If your camera works but video freezes, stutters or drops, the problem is usually the network rather than the camera.

Why it happens

Calls on randomstrangers.chat connect directly between the two browsers (peer-to-peer). Quality depends on both people's connections, so sometimes the issue is on the other end. Video adapts to slow networks, softening the picture rather than freezing, but there are limits. About 1 Mbit/s of upload speed is recommended for clear video.

What to try

  1. Run a speed test and check your upload speed, not just download.
  2. Move closer to your Wi-Fi router, or switch from mobile data to Wi-Fi.
  3. Pause downloads and streaming on your network.
  4. Try the next person. If one call is bad and the next is fine, the problem was probably on their side.
  5. Switch to voice or text if your connection stays weak.

Strict networks

Some workplace, school or public networks block direct calls. If that's the case, you'll be moved on to someone else automatically. Trying a different network, such as your home Wi-Fi, usually solves it.

Test before you chat

Open your device's own camera app to check the camera works at all. If it doesn't work there either, the problem is with the device or its drivers, not the browser.

On a phone?

Phones have their own quirks, including system-level permissions and battery-saving modes. Our guide to random video chat on your phone covers iPhone and Android specifically.

Back to chatting

Most cases of a video chat camera not working come down to permissions, another app holding the camera or a weak connection. Fix those, reload, and you should be good to go.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't the site see my camera?

Usually the browser's camera permission is blocked, or another app is already using the camera. Allow access in site settings and close other apps, then reload the page.

How do I allow camera access?

Click the camera or settings icon in the address bar, or open the browser's site settings, and set Camera and Microphone to Allow. Then reload the page.

Why does the video freeze?

Video calls connect directly between the two browsers, so quality depends on both people's connections. Try a stronger network, close downloads, or switch to voice or text if it keeps freezing.
