Best Mic Settings for Clear Browser Voice Chat

By randomstrangers.chat team5 min read

Few things end a voice call faster than "Hello? Can you hear me?" If your microphone is not working in the browser, or people say you sound distant, echoey or muffled, the cause is almost always one of a handful of simple things. This guide walks through them in order: browser permission, the right input device, echo and a quick test before you call.

The steps work for most modern browsers on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. Menu names vary a little between browsers and versions, so look for similar wording if yours is different.

Allow the mic in your browser

Browsers block websites from using your microphone until you say yes. If you dismissed the prompt or clicked Block by mistake, the site simply won't hear anything.

On a computer

  1. Look at the left side of the address bar for a padlock or settings icon and click it.
  2. Find Microphone and set it to Allow for the site.
  3. Reload the page.

If you don't see the option, open your browser's settings, search for "microphone" or "site permissions", and check the site isn't on the blocked list.

On a phone or tablet

  • Android: in your browser, tap the icon next to the address, then Permissions or Site settings, and allow the microphone. Also check your phone's main Settings > Apps > [your browser] > Permissions.
  • iPhone and iPad: go to Settings, find your browser in the list, and make sure Microphone is switched on. In Safari you can also tap the aA or page settings icon in the address bar to manage the site's mic access.

Check your operating system too

Even when the browser allows the mic, the system may block the browser itself.

  • Windows: Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone. Make sure microphone access is on and your browser is allowed.
  • macOS: System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone. Turn your browser on in the list, then restart the browser.

Only one app at a time

Some systems let only one app use the microphone properly at once. Close other calling apps, voice recorders or meeting software, then reload the chat page.

Pick the right input device

If permissions look fine but your mic is still not working in the browser, the next suspect is the device itself. If you have more than one microphone, say a laptop mic, a webcam mic and a headset, the browser may pick the wrong one.

Choose the mic in the browser

In the same site settings menu where you allowed the mic, there's usually a dropdown to choose which microphone the site uses. Pick the one you're actually speaking into, such as your headset.

Set a default on your system

  • Windows: Settings > System > Sound > Input. Choose your device and speak to watch the level bar move.
  • macOS: System Settings > Sound > Input. Select the device and check the input level meter.
  • Phones: connecting Bluetooth or wired earbuds usually switches the mic automatically. If not, disconnect and reconnect them.

Check the hardware

  • Is there a physical mute switch on your headset or a mute button on the cable?
  • Is the headset plugged into the right socket, or fully paired over Bluetooth?
  • Is the mic boom pointing towards your mouth?

Check the chat itself

On randomstrangers.chat you can mute your mic during a chat. If you muted it earlier, the other person won't hear you until you unmute. Muting is handy, but easy to forget.

If your camera isn't working either, our guide to camera and mic fixes covers video problems too.

Stop echo and feedback

Echo usually means the other person hears their own voice coming back. That happens when your speakers play their voice and your mic picks it up again.

The best fix: headphones

Wired earbuds, Bluetooth earbuds or a headset solve echo almost every time, because the sound goes into your ears instead of the room.

If you can't use headphones

  • Turn your speaker volume down.
  • Move the mic further from the speakers.
  • Avoid using a laptop on a hard table in a bare room, where sound bounces more.

Reduce background noise

  • Close windows and doors.
  • Switch off fans, air conditioning or the TV if you can.
  • Keep the mic close to your mouth, so your voice is much louder than anything else.
  • Soft furnishings like curtains and cushions reduce room echo.

About built-in sound processing

Many devices and browsers apply echo cancellation and noise reduction automatically. Some headsets and system sound apps add their own "enhancements". If your voice sounds robotic, cuts in and out, or is very quiet, try turning extra enhancements off in your system sound settings and testing again.

Sound cutting out?

Choppy audio can be a network problem rather than a mic problem. Calls on randomstrangers.chat connect directly between browsers using peer-to-peer WebRTC. Voice needs far less bandwidth than video, but a weak Wi-Fi signal or a busy network can still cause drop-outs. Moving closer to your router or pausing big downloads usually helps. Some strict networks block direct calls altogether; if that happens, you'll be moved on to someone else.

Test before you call

A 30-second check saves a lot of "can you hear me?" moments.

Quick checklist

  1. Permission: the site is allowed to use your mic.
  2. Device: the right mic is selected in the browser and system.
  3. Level: the input meter moves when you speak.
  4. Mute: your headset and the chat mic are unmuted.
  5. Headphones: in, to prevent echo.
  6. Quiet: fans, TV and open windows dealt with.

Do a self-test

Use your system's input meter or a voice recorder app to say a sentence and play it back. Listen for:

  • Too quiet: raise the input level, or move the mic closer.
  • Distorted or crackly: lower the input level a little.
  • Echoey or hollow: move to a softer room or closer to the mic.

Still not working?

  • Reload the page after changing any setting.
  • Fully close and reopen your browser.
  • Try another browser, or update yours.
  • Restart your device.
  • Check the help page for more tips.

Ready to talk

Most cases of a microphone not working in the browser come down to permission, the wrong device or echo from speakers, and each takes a minute to fix. Once your sound is clear, voice chat becomes much more fun for both of you. Our full guide to random voice chat has tips for great first calls.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't they hear me?

Usually the browser hasn't been allowed to use your microphone, the wrong input device is selected, or your mic is muted in the chat or on your device. Check each of these in turn.

How do I stop echo?

Use headphones or earbuds so the other person's voice doesn't play through your speakers and loop back into your mic. Turning your speaker volume down also helps.

Does a headset help?

Yes. A headset or earbuds with a built-in mic sit close to your mouth, which usually gives clearer sound with less background noise and no echo.
